Mark Teaches Two Workshops at Gryphon in Palo Alto

May 20, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 3:30 pm

WORKSHOP #1
(To register, call Gryphon at 650-493-2131)
10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Introduction to Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar!
Gryphon’s old friend Mark Hanson – longtime Gryphon instructor, Grammy winner, Frets editor, and author of “Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar” – will introduce you to the beautiful world of Hawaiian slack key guitar.
The essence of slack key is fingerpicking in alternate tunings. In this workshop Mark will concentrate on two tunings: “Taro Patch” (Open-G) and “C-Wahine” (C G D G B E, low to high). You’ll learn the necessary fingerpicking patterns (alternating bass), the common chord shapes, parallel-sixth licks, and even a couple of common turn-arounds. And, you will have easy-to-intermediate tunes to take home and play!
Fingerpickers at every level are welcome. Come tuned in “Taro Patch” (Open-G) tuning – D G D G B D, lowest to highest.
Tab handouts, and Mark will have copies of his book.
WORKSHOP #2

1:30-3:30 p.m. – Higher-Level Fingerpicking Gems

In 2005 Mark won a Grammy for his recording of two of his fingerstyle arrangements (Henry Mancini – Pink Guitar CD). In this class he will teach you the ins and outs of his arranging style: the playing techniques and the musical decision making. And, he will teach you several of his best and most popular arrangements, both jazzy and folky. This workshop is perfect for intermediate players who want to stretch their understanding and fingers a bit, and for higher-level players looking to increase their repertoire. Tab to take home.

To register, call Gryphon at 650-493-2131.
