Mark Presents Beginning and Intermediate Fingerstyle Workshops at Gryphon in Palo Alto
May 4 @ 1:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Mark presents two workshops on fingerstyle playing at famed Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, California. Mark has had great success at teaching fundamentals of fingerstyle guitar through his books, DVDs, and in-person instruction. He will get beginners going in the right direction with fun patterns that turn into tuneful guitar solos; and successfully expand the understanding, technique and repertoire of intermediates. Mark Hanson uses enjoyable arrangements and compositions of his own, which he will explain and teach to you.
To register, please call Gryphon directly at (650) 493-2131. Directions.
1) Beginning Fingerpicking (1:00 PM – 3:00 PM)
Mark Hanson, author of more than two dozen fingerpicking books, longtime Gryphon teacher, and 2005 Grammy winner, lays out all the necessities of succeeding at fingerstyle guitar. Proper hand position, creating good tone, keeping steady rhythm, all while learning beautiful, fun patterns and lovely tunes that use them. (His “Canyon Canon” is a YouTube hit!) Aimed at folks who can strum basic chord shapes who want to liven up their playing!
2) Intermediate Fingerpicking (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM)
Mark picks up where the first workshop leaves off, covering more complex fingerpicking patterns, moving chords up the neck, and making beautiful music as a solo fingerpicker. There will be plenty of technique building exercises, plus cool tunes to play: Mark’s recent tunes: the waltz “Mythos,” the barnburner “Easy Virtue” and the sprightly “Cast Away,” all from his 30th Anniversary Edition of Art of Solo Fingerpicking. Copies of the book will be available.
